Noble Sissle (1889–1975) was a musician, composer, and soldier whose work helped preserve the cultural legacy of the Harlem Hellfighters. During World War I, Sissle served with the 369th Infantry Regiment and performed as part of the regiment’s celebrated band under the leadership of James Reese Europe.
After the war, Sissle continued using music as a tool for representation and empowerment. Alongside composer Eubie Blake, he created the groundbreaking musical Shuffle Along, which helped open doors for Black performers and transformed American theater. Through his music and service, Sissle carried forward the spirit of the Harlem Hellfighters and helped shape the future of Black cultural expression.
